When did you start?
My love of science has been with me almost my whole life, as a young child I loved to go to museums and scientific workshops
Career highlight or biggest achievement?
My biggest achievement has been being accepted to the John Monash Science School, a specialist maths, science and associated technologies, it is Victoria's first specialist science school and will give me wonderful opportunities to pursue my love of science by accessing a range of university level equipment and subject areas, fantastic teachers, and simply being with other students who are focused on their education.
What is your dream?
My dream is to be an Environmental Scientist aiming to solve issues of environmental pollution and resource degradation; I am especially focused on the issue of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans and would like to develop a method of removing the tonnes of accumulated plastic in the “Pacific Plastic Soup” and reusing this plastic in some way. I really believe that my generation will be the stewards of the world. Humanity needs to move from the belief that it is “all” about money and power to the understanding of the importance of environmental links.
Who's your hero?
My Grandfather is my hero as he had a hard life growing up and was told that he would never reach his dreams but he overcame the difficulties and now runs a fertiliser company and has helped many farmers grow productive crops.
Any other special talents?
I am a skilled netball player having played for eight years and I am also quite good at playing the flute.
Favourite Music?
I don't really have a favourite type of music as I love most music, whatever comes on on my ipod is what I listen to!
Favourite Movie?
Currently- Zombieland
Favourite Food?
I love multicultural food!
How the grant will help you/how will you use the money?
As one of seven rural students to be selected for a place at John Monash Science School unfortunately I have hit a small snag; I will need to travel approximately four hours every day by public transport to reach the school, there is the option of “Home Stay” which other students are choosing to use however this costs about $215 for five nights a week and that simply cannot be found in the budget of my family. I will use the funding to help pay for accommodation and travel expenses. By reducing my travel time drastically I would be able to apply myself more to my studies and would thrive in this amazing academic opportunity I have be given.
